Gmail offers free phone calls

With technology from its acquisition of Gizmo5, Google is taking on Skype and the rest of the telecom world 
 Google on Wednesday began offering free and low-cost online phone calls to Gmail users in the US through the integration of its Gmail and Google Voice services.

At a media event at its San Francisco office, Gmail product manager Todd Jackson, Google Voice product manager Vincent Paquet, and Google communications product manager Craig Walker recounted how Gmail has grown from an e-mail client into a communications hub that supports Google Talk instant messaging, video and voice chat, and now phone calls.

"We have this communications platform between computers and phones," said Paquet. "Up until now, those platforms didn't communicate with each other, and that's what's about to change."

By integrating Google Voice with Gmail, Google may be able to help Google Voice avoid the fate of another one of its perhaps too innovative services, Google Wave. Gmail has hundreds of millions of active users and exposing them to the opportunity to make free and low-cost calls should encourage wider use of Google Voice.

Google Voice was made available to the public in June after a lengthy period of closed testing. Walker declined to reveal current user numbers for the service; in June, Google said it had over a million active users of Google Voice.

Gmail users will be able to make calls from their Web browser -- provided there's a mic and speakers -- to the phones of people in the U.S. and Canada for free, at least for the remainder of the year, and at a low rate internationally.

"We're saving people a lot of money," said Walker. "The prices we offer this at are super-competitive."

According to a price comparison chart published by Google, a call from Gmail to a U.K. landline is billed at USD 0.02 per minute, compared to USD 0.021 plus a connection fee using a "leading Internet telephony provider," presumably Skype. A call from Gmail to a UK mobile phone is billed at USD 0.18 per minute, compared to USD 0.253 per minute plus a connection fee.

Walker said that Google is committed to maintaining free calls to the U.S. and Canada through the end of the year, and that the current plan is to maintain this rate. He said that Google believes it can make enough money on international calls to sustain the service.

Gmail users can make calls without a Google Voice account but cannot receive them; those doing so will appear to be calling from a generic number, which, if called, will promote Google Voice.

Paquet said Google was not ready to offer Gmail calling to business customers using Google Apps. While he would not explicitly state that Google is working on administrative controls to make the service manageable by IT administrators, he made it clear that Gmail calling for Google Apps users will appear eventually.

Gmail calling for users outside the US is also under development and localized versions can be expected in the months ahead.

Walker said that Google continues to work aggressively to allow users to port their existing phone numbers to Google Voice. However, he was unwilling to commit to a specific timeline for availability.

To promote Gmail calling, Google will be deploying Google Voice phone booths at airports and on campuses for travelers and students.

By the year 2010, netbooks are predicted to be widely used. They are growing ever more convenient, functional, and practical, and in fact, may soon become the mobile device of choice.

What are Netbooks?

Netbooks are described as mini-computers whose sizes range from 7 inches to 10 inches. The larger versions are notebooks or laptops with sizes ranging from 12 to 17 inches. Apparently with these size comparisons, you may say that portability in the netbook laptop arena goes to netbooks.

With its Athlon Neo MV-40 processor and 2GB of RAM, this ThinkPad scored a 52 on WorldBench 6, a screaming speed for netbooks.

It's faster than most netbooks, with a larger, higher-resolution screen; a spacious keyboard; and a bigger hard drive than you'll usually find in Lilliputian laptops.

The Mini 5102 is the latest in HP's line of business-optimised netbooks, featuring a ruggedised metal chassis and design elements tailored for the office road warrior.

It does a great job of offering features that business users care about, but they come at a considerable price; the configuration: 2GB of RAM, an Atom N450 CPU, and an extended six-cell battery.

1. Design

Netbooks are designed for several aspects of computing needs. One may use it to connect to the Internet and to communicate with other people. Their sizes are contributory to their compactness too. When it comes to battery life, most netbooks can stay longer than notebooks making the former less dependent on charging. However, you cannot deny the fact that notebooks are multipurpose in nature allowing you to accomplish more computing tasks. Netbooks are smaller, lighter, and cheaper.

2. Applications

Running applications is also a concern for netbook and Laptop consumers. Surfing the web while one is on the go is possible with netbooks. The same is true if one wants to run basic applications like windows office.

But if one has other things to do or need to open four to five applications all at the same time, laptops are sure winners. Additionally, the larger laptop allows to edit high definition video files.

Furthermore, one may save more files in the hard disk of laptops.

3. Mobility

Both has the upper hand when it comes to mobility, but netbooks are easier to carry; a netbook typically weighs between two and three pounds. Screen sizes can range from seven inches to about 13 inches.

The keyboard is normally somewhere between 75 per cent and 85 per cent the size of a normal computer keyboard. There is a limit to how small of a netbook is practical.

A typical adult, typing on a ridiculously tiny keyboard is going to get old pretty quick. Squinting to see the text on your screen is also quite bothersome.

The future of netbooks may have us looking at lighter weight models, but it's unlikely you'll see a netbook the size of a pack of candies any time in the near future.

4. Cost

Netbooks works on the philosophy 'get as pay'. The more you pay the better specs you have. So netbooks apparently tend to be cheaper than their larger notebook counterparts.

However, there are some tasks that netbooks cannot fulfill thus more computer enthusiasts question the real price attached to the product.

Mobile Phone : What is Infrared (IrDA) ?

Infrared is a new generation technology that is used to transfer data from one infrared enabled device to another by lining up the infrared 'eye' with other devices.The Infrared Data Association (IrDA) defines physical specifications communication protocol standard for the short-range exchange of data over infrared light, for uses such as personal area networks (PANs). Generally in mobiles infrared technology is used for following purposes:

1) Connecting to the Internet from a laptop via your mobile using IrDA.

2) Beaming contact / business card / ring tones / pictures etc to another mobile.

3) Installing software or backing up your data to/from a PC.

Working: Infrared works by lining up the infrared ‘eye’ with other devices. Before you communicate between your PC and your mobile phone, you have to activate the infrared (IRDA) port of your mobile phone. Mobile phones have their own menu item to activate the infrared port. For example, for a Samsung mobile phone you have to choose Menu -> Settings -> Connectivity - > Infrared. After activating the infrared port, you will see the following symbol at the top left corner on the display of your mobile phone and you will know that the infrared port is enabled. Some phone disables the infrared port after some minutes if there is no data exchange on the infrared connection. So, before you start a communication take a look on your mobile phone and reactivate the infrared port if necessary. Look also that there is a straight connection between the infrared sensor of your Pocket PC and your mobile phone and that there is nothing between the two devices that can block the communication.

Nokia launching phone charger powered by a bicycle

Nokia are releasing a new mobile phone charger that can charge up the battery in your mobile using the power generated from riding a bicycle.

The device is really aimed at developing countries where electricity is not as widely available as in developed countries but the whole idea could take off anywhere.

“Bicycles are the most widespread means of transport in many markets around the world, so this is just one more benefit to be gained from an activity people are already doing,” said Alex Lambeek, Vice President at Nokia, in a statement.

This would certainly apply to somewhere like Amsterdam where bicycles are a popular mode of transport for getting about the city.

The new Nokia bicycle charger will fit any Nokia phone that has a 2mm charger jack. The charger comes with a charger kit which includes a special holder for attaching the charger to the bicycle’s handlebars where the phone slots into, and a generator which is attached to the bike’s fork.

Electricity is generated by the movement of the wheels so as you pedal you create the power. In order to charge up a phone you would need to cycle at a speed of about 6 kilometres an hour or more and the faster you go the more your battery gets charged.

As an example, Nokia have said that cycling at a speed of 10 miles an hour for 10 minutes will give you around 28 minutes of talk time or 37 minutes of standby but obviously these times will vary depending on which battery model your phone has.

The charger is likely to cost around 15 euros, which equates to about $18.40, and will be available towards the end of the year from some retailers and online.

Finland based Nokia is currently the world’s largest mobile phone company and along with details of the bicycle powered charger they also announced details of a new phone and I like the sound of it.

With the dual-SIM Nokia C2 you will be able to use two SIM cards at the same time on the same phone. This means that you can have a separate number for each SIM card but use only one device, and you can change from using one SIM to the other without having to turn off the phone first.

That’s pretty cool don’t you think!

Google reveals which countries are demanding censorship and data

In an effort towards greater transparency, Google has released an online tool that will show just who around the world is asking for internet content to be removed or censored.

The thing is, they haven’t included any figures for China because apparently that information is regarded as a state secret. Still, the rest of it is quite enlightening.

Top of the list for data requests was Brazil, who in the period from 1st July to 31st December 2009 made 3,663 data requests.

Next in line was the United States with 3,580 data requests. The United Kingdom followed the US to take up third place with 1,166 data requests.

Brazil was also top for internet content removal requests with 291 in the same six month period. Second for removal requests was Germany with 188, followed by India with 142 and the US with 123.

The online tool which can be viewed at Google dot com forward slash governmentrequests features a map showing each country where it has had government requests for information.

The information doesn’t include any requests from individuals or companies, only government requests and this can be requests for information about users, or court orders to remove content either from the search results or from YouTube. If you click on the country you can see a summary of the information.

“Google, like other technology and telecommunications companies, regularly receives demands from government agencies to remove content from our services” wrote David Drummond, Google’s legal officer on the company blog.

“Of course many of these requests are entirely legitimate, such as requests for the removal of child pornography.

“We also regularly receive requests from law enforcement agencies to hand over private user data. Again, the vast majority of these requests are valid and the information needed is for legitimate criminal investigations.

“However, data about these activities historically has not been broadly available. We believe that greater transparency will lead to less censorship” said Drummond.

Google has been getting a lot of flack recently regarding it’s Street View product and also Buzz, but according to Google the timing of the release of the online tool showing data requests has nothing to do with the privacy complaint in a joint letter from data protection authorities in ten different countries.

Google said they had been working on the online tool for months.

Feds want to turn your phone into a tracking device

Have you been anywhere you wouldn’t want to admit to when questioned by law enforcement?

The government is fighting to be able to follow the movements of any American based on the location of their cell phones, effectively turning them into tracking devices they can use without even having to provide any evidence of criminal wrongdoing.

The Justice Department is facing off against electronic privacy groups in federal appeals court in Philadelphia, arguing that the Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable search and seizure in the Bill of Rights of the U.S. Constitution does not afford privacy in business records, such as those kept by cell phone service providers.

At issue is a Pittsburgh drug-trafficking investigation in which the ATF sought tracking data because suspects used multiple vehicles and residences. Their request was denied, on the grounds that information was “extraordinarily” personal and sensitive.

Your electronic communications are protected in theory by the 1986 Electronic Communications Privacy Act, but government lawyers take the view that it applies only to the content of communications — not data such as geographic location generated by mobile devices.

And it’s not that the government can’t obtain the information — it’s that they want to be able to get it without convincing a judge they have probable cause for a search warrant to get it. So if they’re really determined, and really persuasive, they’ll get it even if they have to have a warrant. But they’re fighting for the ability to skip that step.

The appeals court panel sees the issue as so important that they waived customary 30-minute limits for oral arguments, allowing it to go on for 80 minutes.

The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committe, which generated the 1986 privacy law, plans to revisit the issue through 21st century eyes later this year.

PREPAID CARDS

Prepaid cellphones are popular amongst those who do not have the budget for regular monthly data plans but who still need the use of a mobile as they don’t have to worry about the bill coming in.

However, because it isn’t easy to identify who is using a prepaid mobile phone, these anonymous devices are also popular with terrorists and anyone conducting dodgy deals.

Now two senators have come out and said that it would be beneficial if we could track exactly who is using these phones and they give a number of reasons why.

Senators Charles E. Schumer and John Cornyn, want to see new legislation that will force customers buying a prepaid phone to provide details of their identity and that this information should be kept by carriers for a period of 18 months.

“This proposal is overdue because for years, terrorists, drug kingpins and gang members have stayed one step ahead of the law by using prepaid phones that are hard to trace,” said Schumer.

The pair highlighted how Faisal Shahzad used a prepaid mobile to arrange the purchase of a vehicle and fireworks intended for bombing Times Square and had also used the prepaid phone to make calls to his associates in Pakistan.

The thing is, Shahzad had given personal information to the vendor when buying the phone, which ultimately enabled the authorities to track him and some others down and thwart their attempts.

“We caught a break in catching the Times Square terrorist, but usually a prepaid cell phone is a dead end for law enforcement. There’s no reason why it should still be this easy for terror plotters to cover their tracks” said Schumer.

The Senators also mention the largest insider trading bust in US history which happened last year. Rogue traders had used prepaid phones in order to evade possible wiretaps and one suspect actually chewed through the sim card used in the phone in order to destroy all possible evidence.

“While most Americans use pre-paid mobile devices lawfully, the anonymous nature of these devices gives too much cover to individuals looking to use them for deviant, dangerous means,” said Senator John Cornyn

However, not everyone agrees, as some civil liberties advocates maintain that there should still be a way for anonymous communications to take place.

For example, if an individual wanted to report a crime they might be less inclined to do so if their call could identify them.

What Happened To My Windows?

Have you ever tried installing software into your computer only to end up getting a myriad of problems? Sometimes it could be that your speakers are not working or maybe the screen is blank or perhaps you just can't seem to access the program. This could be due to incompatibility of the software with your windows.

Windows related problem are common to any user but one should not fear it because you can just troubleshoot it yourself. Thus you would not need the service of an IT expert. If you do encounter windows related problems after installing certain software, you can simply restore the computer back to its original status. Yes! In Windows, you can turn time back.

The term used is 'System Restore' and it could be accessed by clicking the start button. Once you have done so, go to 'All Programs' and scroll the list to find the icon that reads 'Accessories'. Then scroll down until you see 'System Tools'You should then be able to locate the icon 'System Restore.?

'System Restore' is useful when it comes to troubleshooting because it could tell you whether Windows is acting weird simply due to software incompatibility or certain hardware within the computer is nearing its death day.

The steps on using the 'System Restore' are to just follow the instructions listed on the wizard. When wary of installing new software, you could also create a checkpoint whereby you can restore your computer to the nearest date. This way, you could avoid losing precious data. However you should not worry about losing too much data because this tool works in such a way that it only reverts back the computer to its original state according to a checkpoint you have chosen without deleting any data that was saved within those few days you have installed your software.

Nonetheless, when your software is unresponsive although you tried to shut it down, you could always tap on the 'magic buttons' on your keyboard to access Window's miracle. Just press Ctrl + Alt + Del, and out pops Windows Task Manager.

Examples of apps to curb texting while driving

Some services that aim to curb distractions from phones used while driving:

— Cellcontrol: This service from ObdEdge LLC uses a $60 device that plugs into the car's onboard diagnostics port, which is usually under the steering wheel. A separate application for the driver's phone costs $25 to download and $8.95 a month to use. The phone connects to the device in the port through wireless Bluetooth technology. When the device detects that the car is moving, it tells the phone to lock texting, calling or both, depending on the user's settings. Cellcontrol works with BlackBerrys and phones running Windows Mobile and Symbian software. Originally designed for companies to use in their fleet cars and trucks, it is now marketed to consumers as well.

— iZup: This application from Illume Software uses a phone's GPS chip to determine if it's in motion, then locks predetermined phone functions such as texting and calling. The service can't tell if you're the driver or the passenger. To use the phone as a passenger, you must have a password and go to iZup's Web site to temporarily disable the service. The service works on BlackBerrys, Windows Mobile and Android phones. The cost is $4.95 per month or $49.95 per year.

— DriveSafe.ly: The iSpeech Inc. application doesn't detect if you're driving. Instead, you tell it that you're driving by turning it on. The app will then will read incoming text messages aloud. If you forget to turn it off after getting out of the car, DriveSafe.ly could create some embarrassing moments. The service is available for BlackBerrys, iPhones, Android and Windows Mobile phones. A free version reads out only the first 25 words of each message. The "Pro" version costs $13.95 to buy, with no service fees.
